Election Postmortem

I’ve learnt two important things from this election.

The first is that you should always have an understanding of the constraints and processes involved in the thing you’re considering and you need to fit the astrology around them. My forecasts for a hung parliament with Brown remaining PM – which I’ll take as a successful prediction – were based on the (somewhat naive) assumption we would know the result of how the hung parliament would fall out on Friday 7th May. My prediction should have made it clear that I was referring to the position on Friday morning.

The second lesson is stick to what the astrology is telling you and don’t get carried away with media hype. I revised my assessment of Nick Clegg following the reaction after the first leaders debate and the performance of the Lib Dems in the election is far more in line with my original assessment. Stick to what the astrology tells you.

So what happens next?

Well I have already pointed out that this election is the end of a chapter and that events of late May and June/July will be the beginning of the next one. What I haven’t pointed out is that the UK is about to have transiting Uranus opposition natal Uranus. The current situation is very reflective of that.

The new moon is on 14th May. We’re at the end of a lunar cycle. Currently – Sunday – the Moon has some very productive aspects to make. It is about to conjunct Jupiter and will have to oppose Saturn and conjuct Uranus before it leaves Pisces late this evening. This will also pick up the charts of both Cameron and Clegg. All parties will want to have a conclusion before the markets open tomorrow and these aspects almost certainly indicate some intense negotiations. I’m not sure that they’ll reach a final agreement. This may continue on for a few days, possibly until the New Moon. It may take this long to get all the pieces in place. As I said before, Mars catches up with Brown’s Pluto on 14th and it may take until then for him to physically move.

The Liberal Democrats have the new moon on their descendant. This would be a classic significator for a major new relationship. But who with?

The Conservatives have their moon around 25 Taurus – it’s an untimed chart so we need to give it some latitude but Labour have their Sun at 22 Aquarius which is square to the New Moon.

The UK has Saturn at 23 Leo. A New Moon aspecting this point would strongly indicate a structural change, especially from Taurus, and the New Moon is in the UK 8th house, indicating collaboration (shared resources) of some sort.

So having listed all these indicators what conclusions can we draw?

Brown will remain PM until a conclusion is reached; he is required to do this by law. If no conclusions are reached today I believe they will drag on until the New Moon.

As to who will form a new government, I wouldn’t rule out Brown staying but there will be another election soon. That is certainly part of the cardinal T-Square which is about to take shape.

General Election – take your positions for the first act

We’re now in the final lunar cycle before the polls open on Thursday. The Moon entered Aquarius just before 10pm BST on 4th May and will be at 16 Aquarius at 7 am on 6th May 2010 and will stay in Aquarius until 9.30 on Friday morning when we shall almost certainly know the result.  This is the home stretch and the extremely tense aspects which the Moon will make between now and then will certainly give us a turbulent last day of campaigning. I’ve already written a fuller breakdown on the astrology of election day.

So, having seen the campaign and watched the players perform, am I going to change my mind? I don’t think so. I’ll stick with my initial assessment: hung parliament with Brown staying as PM. 16 Aquarius is Gordon’s Mercury. Much has been made of the radical nature of Aquarius and the people’s desire for change but that Moon, and the Sun and Mars, pick up Brown’s chart most strongly. Cameron and Clegg – because they are of similar ages – have their nodal axis triggered by that Tsquare on the opening of the polls. The nodal axis is associated with fame and notoriety and there’s little to choose astrologically between Cameron and Clegg, although the Moon is now picking up that lovely Moon Venus opposition of Clegg’s. Will Cameron be known as the one who lost the election?

Interestingly, both Brown and Cameron change fidaria – a planetary period – in the autumn, a strong indication that they will be gone from the political scene by then. Clegg, however, changed fidaria (assuming a night birth) on 20th April 2010 which was just as the Lib Dem poll rating began to rise after the first leadership debate.

I misjudged the leadership debate slightly. I said that what ever happened in the first wouldn’t matter to the second and third. It should have been what happened in the first would make no difference to the second and third debates.

A final point on Gordon Brown. Mars will regain the position at which it turned retrograde on 16th May. Two days before that it will catch up with Gordon’s Pluto on the day of a New Moon. It’s very possible that there may be a sudden change in Brown’s circumstances at this point. Certainly a day to watch.

Don’t forget to vote.

Mercury Retrograde – Take 2

The closure of UK airspace was an extremely symbolic expression of Mercury retrograde in Taurus. This is even more poignant when you remember that the 1801 UK chart has Mars at 11 Taurus and Mercury stationed at 12 Taurus.

Today the Moon conjoined Mars and squared Mercury and on Sunday Mercury and Mars will make a square aspect in the sky. Mercury and Mars have a reputation for inflamed or agravated communication. Combining the symbols gives us hasty words; angry or forceful ideas; swift travel; demanding or explosive concepts; and don’t forget Mars is also heat and Mercury is wind. As the aspect is square, these combinations are unlikely to be easy.

Mercury Retrograde

You’ll probably have seen quite a few articles or comments about Mercury going retrograde at the weekend and may be wondering what all the fuss is about.

Retrograde just means backwards. All planets have periods where they appear to move backwards across the sky as seen from the Earth. It’s a geocentric phenomenon – that’s an optical illusion caused by the fact that we’re on a planet orbiting the Sun, not on the Sun itself.

Mercury – the planet symbolising communication – has three retrograde periods a year, each of three weeks, and they will be in signs of the same element; this time it’s earth. The Capricorn period was from just after Christmas to mid January. This period is in Taurus and the Virgo period is in August. The element in question usually underlies other active themes. Currently Saturn has popped back into Virgo and will oppose Uranus on 26th April. Pluto is also in Capricorn underlining the need to pay attention to reality. We’re not talking about ideas (air), feelings (water) or vision (fire); we’re talking about real, material things – earth. And money. Of course.

Periods when Mercury is retrograde have a terrible. In fact some astrologers use them as a catch all excuse for things going wrong, and for putting off starting something new. Some would have you believe that astrologers of old would not start anything during a Mercury retrograde. While all Mercury ruled actions – such as signing contracts – should be treated with extreme caution, the three weeks when Mercury appears to be going backwards provides us with a period where we can deepen our understanding, revise our opinions and review projects which need adjusting. Communications rarely go smoothly but there is usually something which gets discovered or uncovered which aids and enhances our understanding.

Computers, being particularly Mercurial, do suffer during a Mercury retrograde, so make sure you’ve got your backup plan in place. In 15 years of working with computer systems I’ve never known a project not hurtle towards the next Mercury retrograde period. It just keeps us on our toes.

Leaders’ Debates: UK General Election 2010

The UK general election campaign reaches an historic point this week. The first of three debates between the leaders of the three main parties will take place on Thursday night. Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg will face questions on the topic of home affairs and will be broadcast by ITV, who are also using many new, social media tools to record instant reactions. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/apr/14/itv-leaders-debate-reaction-tracking

The second debate is on international affairs and broadcast by Sky and the last on the economy and broadcast by the BBC.

From an astrological point of view, what is interesting to note is that the first debate happens while the Sun is in Aries and Mercury is direct and the second two while the Sun is in Taurus and Mercury is retrograde. Therefore the performance after the first debate is likely to be unrelated to the second two. Who ever gains an advantage in the second debate can build a substantial amount of momentum. It will be interesting to follow.

Aries New Moon 2010

Today brings the New Moon in Aries. New Moons mark the beginning of a cycle and this is emphasised by being in Aries, the first sign of the zodiac. Aries pioneering energy makes today a great time for putting daring and challenging plans together. If you want to make significant changes in your life then a new moon is a great time to put a plan together. Try to spend some quiet time getting your ideas straight in your head, make a list so you’ve got an objective record of what you want to achieve and the initial ideas of how you’re going to do this. You may want to do a simple ritual to state your intention. This can be as simple as clearing your mind and stating your intention out loud, it doesn’t have to be a full theatrical production.

The house that the new moon falls in will be an area where you could make new changes most easily:

  • First house: your physical body – a new fitness regime?
  • Second house: money and resources – a new savings plan? A new diet?
  • Third house: communication and siblings/neighbours –  begin a writing course?
  • Fourth house: physical environment, foundations – spring cleaning? Building new foundations or work on your house?
  • Fifth house: creativity and children – a new creative venture?
  • Sixth house: routine and service – investigate voluntary work? Revise your routine, making sure it’s not a rut?
  • Seventh house: partnerships – new relationships or friendships? Meet new people?
  • Eighth house: shared resources and emotions – review your joint account? Begin working on a phobia?
  • Ninth house: philosophy and religious matters – a new spiritual practice?
  • Tenth house: status in the world and mastery – a new job?
  • Eleventh house: groups and community – start a new campaigning group?
  • Twelfth house: institutions and self undoing – think about what connects you to the bigger picture?

Wherever the new moon falls in your chart you can think of new ventures starting now as your own personal quest. This is where you break into new ground, pushing back your comfort zone and challenging your ideas of who you are and what you’re about. An Aries symbol is the questing knight. What quest are you following? Whose favour are you carrying?

Who would true Valour see
Let him come hither;
One here will Constant be,
Come Wind, come Weather.
There’s no Discouragement,
Shall make him once Relent,
His first avow’d Intent,
To be a Pilgrim.

Who so beset him round,
With dismal Storys,
Do but themselves Confound;
His Strength the more is.
No Lyon can him fright,
He’l with a Gyant Fight,
But he will have a right,
To be a Pilgrim.

Hobgoblin, nor foul Fiend,
Can daunt his Spirit:
He knows, he at the end,
Shall Life Inherit.
Then Fancies fly away,
He’l fear not what men say,
He’l labour Night and Day,
To be a Pilgrim.

What’s the state of the parties?

Given the current state of party politics in the UK, I thought it would be interesting to look at what’s happening to the individual parties astrologically. We have similar problems here as when we look at national charts: not everything has a nice discrete start moment.  Let’s start with the incumbents.

The Labour Party

The British Labour Party has two potential charts. The first for the formation of the Labour Representation Committee in 1900, the second for the collaboration which came to be the Parliamentary Labour Party. Neither have times and are set for noon. I’ve put them up with ascendants and descendants as many astrologers treat them as if they are good timed charts. They should be treated with caution. The Parliamentary Labour Party chart seems to have more relevance for political matters, the first chart appears to have more to say about the ideas and philosophy of the labour movement.

There are two things which immediately come to mind when looking at this parliamentary chart: the grand cross in the early degrees of the cardinal signs and Jupiter at 27 degrees of Taurus. Saturn – in early Libra – and Pluto – in early Capricorn – have already transited the Moon and Uranus of this chart. As Jupiter and Uranus move into Aries in June, Saturn moves back into Libra, and Pluto move onward in Capricorn this whole aspect pattern will be seriously tested. The Neptune transit to Jupiter is a questioning of values and philosophy. As an astrologer, I’m rather relieved to find this. If they weren’t been examining their values then there was no hope. Mars in the first labour chart is at 28 Aquarius, so also under the transit of Neptune. Values – Jupiter – and effectiveness – Mars. These are transits that either see a complete overhaul of deep principles or see the demise of the movement.

But these are bigger changes over a longer period of time than the election campaign. On 6th June the Sun, Moon, Mars T-square, which I’ve talked about else where, picks up Mercury at 16 Aquarius which is conjunct the UK 1801 Venus. This in an optimistic note for the election.

The Conservative Party

The British Conservative Party doesn’t have a clear start point. In 1867 Disraeli reorganised the party and the name of the National Union of Conservatives and Constitutional Associations was adopted. There is no confirmed time for this event; Charles Carter used a time of 10 am, the chart shown in for noon.

Jupiter in Aquarius is also under pressure from Neptune, along with Saturn and the Moon in a T-Square in late fixed signs. This is also a questioning of meaning and purpose, as with the labour party, but Saturn also indicates a challenge to their structure and the Moon to their grass roots support. Neptune challenges through confusion and disintegration. The Berlin Wall fell under a Saturn Neptune Uranus transit in 1989 – the wall was washed away.

The Sun, Moon, Mars T-Square on election day is picked up by their Pluto at 15 Taurus and Sun at 19 Scorpio. There doesn’t seem to be anything here to change the existing prediction of hung parliament with Labour PM.

Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats were formed in 1988 when the Liberal Party and the Social and Democratic Party(SDP) merged.

The Lib Dems have Mercury at 19 Aquarius  and Pluto at 12 Scorpio, in range of the Sun, Moon, Mars T-Square, showing they’re certainly in the fight for this election and will probably be involved in the melee right up to the opening of the polls.

Uranus and Saturn are conjunct at zero and one of Capricorn in the Lib Dems chart. The current Uranus Saturn opposition is the culmination of that seed moment. It may be that the constitutional reforms which are provoked by the coming election form the achievement symbolised by the transiting opposition; but it could also be a crisis triggered by the lack of achievement. Transits to the SDP chart will pick up planets in early Aries and Libra, and in the Liberal chart we see another transit from Neptune to Mars. If the Liberal Democrats fail to make an impact at this election, it’s very likely that the opposition between Uranus and Saturn also symbolises a deep questioning of purpose and direction.

The UK

How does the astrological position of the UK help us understand what’s going on?

Regarding the election, the Sun, Moon, Mars T-Square on election day picks up the 11th/5th/8th houses of the UK. The 11th symbolises parliament and the progressed Jupiter is about to move into this house. The solar arc Jupiter is at 27 Aquarius and, in my mind, echoes the Jupiter transits of the parties mentioned above.

It’s very likely that the result of this election will force substantial changes. The solar arc ascendant is at 2 Taurus, this is conjunct the stationary Mercury in the sky, and the MC and Moon of Brown’s solar return.

The changes will come after this election.

Nick Clegg, the King maker?

Nick Clegg

The UK electoral system is biased to the two main parties. In practical terms it’s not possible for a party other than Labour or Conservative to win a majority of seats and so form a government. However other parties do stand candidates and the third party – the Liberal Democrats – usually takes around 20% of the vote. The Liberal Democrats were formed when the Social Democrats merged with the Liberal Party in 1988. As a hung parliament is my prediction the smaller parties will have more influence than usual. We should look at their leader, Nick Clegg, and their finance spokesman, Vince Cable. We don’t have a birth time for either gentleman, so I’ve put the charts up without houses. This looses a layer of precision but you can usually get the gist of things.

Nick Clegg

Chart

Not a great deal of activity going on here but there is a rather nice double whammy between the nodes and the Sun. Clegg has the Sun at 16 Capricorn, and the nodes in the sky are at 13 Capricorn/Cancer. The Sun on election day is at 15 Taurus which picks up Clegg’s north node at 14 Taurus.

Clegg shares many slower planetary positions with Cameron as he’s only a few months younger: both have Jupiter conjunct the UK Jupiter, and both have Uranus conjunct Pluto opposite Saturn and Chiron. They’re both just coming out of their midlife transits and looking to see what happens next.

Vince Cable

Chart

Vince Cable

Cable has a little bit more going on. His Venus, at 27 Gemini, is square to the Uranus Saturn opposition on 26th April and will be square to the Jupiter Saturn opposition which happens after the election. With Cable’s speciality being finance and economics, and there being rumours of him being a strong candidate for the chancellor of a hung parliament, the focus on Venus is entirely appropriate. We don’t know what houses Venus rules or which house it falls in because we don’t have a birth time so we can’t see quite how this will play out.

The Sun on election day is conjunct his natal Sun and it pulls in the planets which sextile his Sun on either side: Mars in Pisces and Moon conjunct Jupiter in Cancer. That Moon Jupiter conjunction is conjunct the UK 1801 Moon. He does feel good to the public I think and he made a very good job of  being the voice of reason during the banking crisis.

His Mars, at 16 Pisces, is conjunct the Part of Fortune of the chart for the opening of the polls. This is a little tenuous as we don’t know how relevant that chart is, but Pars Fortuna/Part of Fortune/Fortuna is also know as your treasure. X really does mark the spot. If we look at the charts for the party we see 16 Pisces is the position of the Sun of the Liberal Democrats and Cable is a very effective offensive weapon on their behalf. The Moon Mars Sun T-Square on election day also tightly picks up the MC/IC and Chiron of the Social Democrats’ chart. It will be interesting to see how this plays out on the day.

While it’s obvious that the Liberal Democrats must have a role to play in the upcoming election it’s difficult to find an astrological justification for anything spectacular happening to Clegg from this untimed chart. Cable seems to have more potential showing but it seems that the real power still will lie with the two main parties.

David Cameron, pretender to the throne?

David Cameron

Chart, Solar Return for Brown and Cameron, Transits and progressions for David Cameron

David Cameron

Live already looked at the conditions in the run up to the election, at Gordon Brown and now it’s time to look at the leader of the opposition, David Cameron.

The major transits Cameron is experiencing are the Saturn conjunct the ascendant and square the MC and Pluto conjunct the IC. Uranus is only now moving up to oppose Saturn near to his descendant. Neptune is opposite his Mars, not an aspect you would associate with winning, Neptune usually calls for more creative means to reach your goals rather than a straight fight. Jupiter was conjunct Neptune three times during 2009 and this may have brought more luck, buoyancy and opportunity than he has now. The glamour has given way to plain old confusion and obfuscation.

If we look at election day, the Moon, Sun and Mars are in a tight T-Square, see previous articles for more on this. This picks up Cameron’s natal nodes, known by some as the axis of destiny showing our life purpose. Mars in the sky on election day picks up Cameron’s progressed MC. Not the an unambiguous indicator of success but a contributory factor as it is square his natal nodes. We need to examine other factors to see how much weight to give this. Don’t forget – as John Frawley reminded us after John Kerry lost the US election – that even though they lost the loosing candidate has probalby reached a lifetime high point.

An aspect which is a definite asset is Pluto currently making a sextile to his Mercury in Scorpio. This adds weight and authority to his speech and communication. His natal Mercury is square to the Moon and Jupiter, conjunct in Leo and sextile to the ascendant, a configuration which certainly contributes to Cameron’s charisma and delivery. Although with this rather nice combination it’s a mystery why he should spend so much time trying to convince the British public that he’s just like them. His Jupiter is conjunct Jupiter in the UK 1801 chart and his Venus is conjunct the ascendant. He’s an man of influence and means and – in my opinion – my do better if he tried to pretend he takes the bus.

A couple of progressed planets add to this: his progressed Jupiter is exactly square his natal Mercury and his progressed ascendant is just about to reach that Mercury. These are all indications of increasing gravitas and grandeur but I can’t see anything which pushes him ahead of Brown to take the win.

Lets look to see if the Solar Return has anything to add.

A major factor in a solar return is the position of the Sun and it’s aspects. Here was have an eighth house Sun with a trine to a first house Jupiter and a fourth house Moon. This is about as good as it gets but it matches Brown’s who also has a eighth house Sun but conjunct Jupiter. He has the nodes conjunct the solar return ascendant indicating fame/notoriety and pushing into a new phase of life.

The ruler of the year – Venus, from the profected chart ascendant – in the solar return chart is in Virgo conjunct Saturn and Mercury, opposite Uranus. Not the best condition for the year ruler. Although there are strong indicators of a successful year, they are matched by equally strong or stronger factors in Brown’s chart. I stay with my assessment of a hung parliament with Brown remaining PM.

Gordon Brown, the next PM?

Gordon Brown

Having put together an overview of the conditions leading up to the UK general election I thought it was about time I had a look at the candidates and how they shape up on the day. This article looks at Gordon Brown. Cameron, Clegg et al will follow.

It’s difficult to know what charts to use for elections. Do you use the opening of the poles? and if so, what about postal votes? We’re lucky this time around, in that we’ve got a third quarter moon phase just before the poles open at 5.15 am. Mars joins the empty leg of that square to give us a tight fixed T-square – Sun at 15 Taurus, Moon at 15 Aquarius and Mars at 14 Leo. Mars, don’t forget, has been retrograde and is now nearly back at the point it started to travel backwards – 19 Leo – so what ever this is about is not a new idea, but the conclusion of a story which is already in motion. There will almost certainly have been heated debate and argument in the last 24 hours – that Mars in not sitting quietly in the corner.

We should also cast an eye over the chart for the UK and you can see that the T-square of the third quarter moon picks up Mars in the UK chart – 11 Taurus – the 11th/5th house cusps of the 1801 chart and Venus at 16 Aquarius. The 11th house represents parliament, the 10th is the King or leader. The second house round from a particular house represents their resources, in the natal chart the 1st house is the individual and the second house his resources. The 11th house is the resources of the leader, it’s the mechanism of government.

A lot of articles that I’ve read are assuming that the Saturn Uranus opposition signifies the triumph of the new and young over the old and therefore hands the win to David Cameron. This may have been the case at the beginning of the series of five oppositions – Obama’s election was within days of the first opposition – but we’re now at the end and the planets are in the final degrees of the signs, and one of those signs is Pisces, the final sign.

A look at the Aries ingress chart, shows that this T-square (from the third quarter moon) falls in the same houses, echoing the same message and a look at the opening of the polls chart gives us the Moon Mars opposition across the MC/IC, which is to be expected as the polls open shortly after. We do have an angular Uranus – change is at the top of the agenda – but it’s on the descendant. We’re looking to pastures greener over the proverbial fence. Saturn is firmly in the first house – us – and not that far from the ascendant. The electorate is firmly conservative in outlook, which isn’t the same as being Conservative in outlook.

When push comes to shove a retrograde but nearly stationary Mercury in Taurus isn’t likely to herald major change.

Gordon Brown

Chart, Solar Return for Brown and Cameron, Transits and progressions for Gordon Brown

The incumbent PM is having Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto transits. The one most people have noticed is Pluto sitting on his MC – his status is being challenged. There’s also Saturn having been opposite his Venus and Mars in Pisces, Saturn has completed his last exact aspect but is still near enough to make his presence felt. Jupiter and Uranus are in Pisces and near to that Same Venus Mars conjunction. Jupiter will be conjunct Mars on the day of the election; Uranus is further on and has made his last exact aspect. Jupiter will oppose Saturn in the sky at 27 degrees of Pisces later in May. The hard aspects between these two planets usually mark crises in the economic cycle. In the current circumstances it’s difficult to see quite what may happen. Those who are forecasting a double dip in the recession are mainly focusing on the aspects between Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto. All of which comes to a peak in June. See my article on the run up to the election for more details.

Lets focus a little on the transits to Brown’s MC, the point of greatest achievement in a chart. Capricorn is the sign on the MC – Brown physically represents Capricorn very well – and it’s ruled by Saturn, which is in the 6th house in Brown’s natal chart and ruled by Venus as Saturn is in Libra. The Saturn Pluto square in the sky sees Saturn conjunct itself – he’s on a Saturn return – and Pluto conjunct the MC. This is quite heavy energy, it’s not light and fluffy, relaxed and confident; it’s weighty and serious. He should bring back Prudence! She – Saturn in Libra and so ruled by Venus – is a figure of restraint and caution which fits very well in the current climate and with Brown’s current transits.

His progressed Sun is at 29 degrees of Aries – but Cameron’s Sun is also at 29 degrees – will move into Taurus and sextile his natal Sun in October. The progressed Sun changing sign is usually indicative of a change, a once in 30 year change. in 2011 his progressed Jupiter will change signs. The slower moving planets don’t always get a chance to change sign but this is outside of this analysis.

A good indicator for the incumbent PM is activity around the IC as he will have to move house. There isn’t any. Just Pluto on the MC.

To finish off, lets cast our eyes over his solar return for this year. The first thing which catches your eye is the Moon in Taurus on the MC of the solar return chart. This is the same degree as that of Mercuy’s station. I think this shows someone staying put. This Moon is also square to Mars and this echos the Moon Mars square on the day of the election. This isn’t breaking into new territory.

The profection chart shows the ruler of the year which is Jupiter. As we’ve said, Jupiter is conjunct Mars on the day of the election and in the solar return chart Jupiter is conjunct Venus and the Sun on the cusp of the eighth. And Cameron also has an eighth house Sun in his solar return chart, so neither placement is indicative of change. The ascendant in the solar return chart is conjunct Brown’s natal Moon Pluto conjunction. Mars transited backwards over this earlier in the year, around the time of the reports of bullying behaviour. With Mars direct and back to this point Brown should be able to shine if he plays to his strengths and doesn’t try to be something he isn’t.
