Locational Astrology

There are many techniques for dealing with changes in location. Here are the major ones.

Relocation Astrology

When you cast a chart you need three pieces of information: date, time and place. At any single moment somewhere on Earth the sun is rising and setting, culminating and anit-culminating. The location is the only difference, the planetary positions are the same. Two people born at the same moment but in different places may have quite different charts due to different angles and houses but the planets will be in exactly the same position.

To create a relocated chart change the location but keep the time zone of the birth location.

Your natal chart is locked to your birthplace. If a person moves a significant distance from this location they may consider using a chart relocated for their new abode. If they live their for some time they may experience the new house positions as more relevant than their natal ones.

Astro*Carto*Graphy

Created by Jim Lewis, this technique maps the angularity of the planets around the world. This marks out the areas of the world which become associated with the various planetary energies.

This is a copywrite technique. Non copywrite techniques which use the same idea are referred to as Solar Maps, produced by the Astrolabe programme, or Locality mapping. Which ever product is used to create the map, it shows lines which join places where a particular planet is angular for a particular moment. The map shows points of planetary angularity for a particular moment.

At any moment, somewhere on Earth, the Sun will be rising, setting, culminating and anti culminating. The Sun on the above map has a rising/setting line which is curved, which also marks the boundary between night and day, and an MC and an IC line which are vertical.

Crossing points between lines give that latitude an element of the planetary combination.

Lines show the actual position of the planets rather than the position of their zodiacal longitude, hence a chart with Pluto rising may not have the Pluto Asc line over that location but it will be near it. This is particularly obvious with Pluto due to its large inclination with the ecliptic.

Local Space Astrology

Uses the equatorial co-ordinate system which measures the height and position of the planets in the sky. This allows us to associate direction with a planet. Local space maps can be used alongside Astro*Carto*Graphy maps.

A local space chart aligns with the compass points. The horoscope is based on the ecliptic, on positions of zodiacal longitude. Local space uses azimuth and altitude.

Planets changing order

This can happen when one planet has a high declination and so usually concerns Pluto. For instance I have the following in London: Venus, Pluto, Uranus, but in San Francisco I have Pluto Venus Uranus.

Aspects changing

Due to the differences in co-ordinate system sometimes completely different aspects are found between the planets. A natal square may become a local space trine at certain locations.

You can use the chart as a compass and see the position of the planets as physical lines. Movement along these lines can bring experiences similar to the planet involved. For instance it is not unusual to have accidents or road rage when driving along you Mars line.

If you move more than about 50 miles from your birthplace using the Local Space chart will distort the lines. Use the lines direct onto a map if considering greater distances.
