The Astrological Planets

Planets: The driving forces in astrology

The word planet comes from the ancient word for wanderer as the planets can be seen moving against the background of the Fixed Stars. The fixed stars do move but so slowly they can’t be observed by the naked eye. For astrological purposes we include the Sun and the Moon when we talk about the Planets, although we are quite aware that they are not astronomical planets. To lessen this confusion, some astrologers refer to the Sun and the Moon as the Lights or the Luminaries.

The planets are the most important piece of the astrological puzzle, symbolising major energies or drives, and can be likened to the what of astrological language. Planets show what is happening, the Signs show how it will happen, and the Houses show where.

The quotes used are taken from The Quotable Horoscope by David Howarth.

Planets can be luminaries, personal, social or transpersonal.
