Independence was granted at 4.20 am on 4th January 1948. This was elected by Burmese astrologers, the moment being judged as auspicious. Independence celebrations took place in "before dawn in bright moonlight".
The name was changed to Myanmar in 1988 after anti government protests.
Separation from India was granted in 1935.
