Nuts & Bolts - The Astrological Planets

The driving forces in astrology

Sun | Moon | Mercury | Venus | Mars | Jupiter | Saturn | Uranus | Neptune | Pluto

The quotes used below are taken from The Quotable Horoscope by David Howarth.

Planets can be luminaries, personal, social or transpersonal.

Transpersonal or Outer Planets

Planets outside of Saturn's orbit are known as outer planets. They move past the individual and society and represent forces and ideas which transcend these things. They are also known as transaturnian planets. The ancient system of rulerships was built on the seven visible planets. Some have tried to integrate the outer planets into this but it is my opinion that this is nonsense; you cannot talk meaningfully about outer planet sign rulership.

I am becoming increasingly of the opinion that transpersonal planets are of particular importance when they are configured with the luminaries or the personal planets or angles but if they do not make this type of contact then they don't mean very much to the individual although they may say something general about their generation. It seems as if the outer planets make a type of time stamp which ties the individual to their time period. If you have personal contacts then you are very much of that time; those that don't have them integrated in this way could be from any time period.

Uranus

Transpersonal Planet
Superior Planet
Retrograde period: Uranus is retrograde every year while in opposition to the Sun. The retrograde period begins just before it trines the Sun.

Revolution, the unusual, alienation, freedom, radical change, deviation from the norm, independence, the urge to break free, the outcast, division, electricity, thinking outside of the box.

There are two ways to live your life - as though nothing is a miracle, or as everything is.
Einstein

In order to break through the authority and stability of Saturn you need the outspoken, radical energy of Uranus. Anything which moves beyond the accepted, traditions into new territory is symbolised by Uranus. Those with Uranus strong is their charts embody this independent quality which can lead to their being outcast and alienated or can lend them an arrogance or outspoken quality which comes from working to a different set of rules.

Strong Uranian influences can bring an unexpected right wing reaction. Technology and radical advances are also covered here.

In Mundane Astrology:

All change, by revolution or reasoned argument which leads to reform; upheaval; new technology; power industry; political dissidents.

Neptune

Transpersonal Planet
Superior Planet
Retrograde period: Neptune is retrograde every year while in opposition to the Sun. The retrograde period begins just before it trines the Sun.

Deception, enchantment, scandal, redemption, spirit, the urge to transcend the body, the mystical, dreams, fantasies, refinement, purity, confusion, fog, scandal.

One foot in spirit and one on a banana peel.
David Hayward

As it is to do with transcending the material world, Neptune has an other worldly quality about it. There can be a lack of clarity when dealing with details and questionable judgement when making decisions which have to do with the real world.

In Mundane Astrology:

Glamour, fashion, dance; advertising; Image a nation has of itself however deceptive or illusory; Politically to do with socialism and a nation's ideals; scandals; altered states of consciousness, drugs, alcohol; oil; the sea.

Pluto

Transpersonal Planet
Superior Planet
Retrograde period: Pluto is retrograde every year while in opposition to the Sun. The retrograde period begins just before it trines the Sun.
Data and Sources

Taboo, transformation, elimination, the underworld, the shadow, death, obsession, rebirth, survival, rape, crisis.

Every seed destroys its container.
Anon

Pluto is another force which moves us beyond existing boundaries. As the caterpillar transforms itself into a butterfly the caterpillar ceases to exist, when Pluto brings change the thing we have changed from ceases to be and we are left with only the new form. This is transformation; that which is dead is eliminated and needs to be purged in order that what ever is being purged can progress. Therefore Pluto also rules the products and organs of elimination.

Underworld characters, especially those who are invisible to authority, are also Pluto figures. Any taboo such as rape is covered by Pluto, this also covers sacred taboos.

In Mundane Astrology:

Power and finance; wealth and inner resources of the nation; secret societies; subversion; rejuvenation; reconstruction; hidden assets.
